The advisory board of the Sex-Positive Journalism Awards has decided to add a new division to the awards for sex- or sexual orientation-themed publications (such as Nerve.com, Playboy, Ynot.com, etc.)
"Originally, the board had limited the awards to mainstream publications because we felt these were the publications that need the most encouragement to improve their reporting in this area," said board member Miriam Axel-Lute. "We felt that writers who managed to stay objective and sex-positive in those environments deserved recognition. We wanted to lift up examples of what it would look like for mainstream media to be less sex-negative in its reporting."
However, many sex-positive writers have expressed to us that there is also a need to honor those who have devoted their careers to furthering sex-positive journalism, a decision that often excludes them from publishing in more mainstream or general-topic publications. These writers, and the places that publish their work, are essential voices that bring the public information they won't get in the regular media and keep the mainstream media honest.
The Sexies board is excited to be offering an award for the best sex-positive news, features, and opinions from publications that focus on sexual topics, and encourages readers to submit articles in this new division as well.
